Awareness Mural on the Disappearance of the Sparrow in Estepona
As part of an ambitious urban art project promoted by the Estepona City Council, we have painted a mural that covers the entire facade of an emblematic building in the city center. This intervention carries a profound message of ecological awareness about the loss of biodiversity in our urban environments, specifically focusing on the disappearance of the sparrow, one of the most common and representative birds in cities, which, however, now faces serious conservation problems.
The mural, which stands out for its size and visual impact, features giant sparrows that seem to fly symbolically across the surface of the building. These birds, traditionally associated with urban life, take on a new scale here to highlight their vulnerability and the drastic change their populations have undergone in recent years. Through these imposing sparrows, we seek to make visible an environmental problem that often goes unnoticed in daily life: the loss of urban species that, like the sparrow, have witnessed an accelerated transformation of their habitats, but whose presence remains essential for the ecological balance of our cities.
The sparrow, which once thrived in the patios, gardens, and rooftops of Estepona, is now an endangered species due to environmental pollution, the scarcity of suitable habitats, the excessive use of pesticides, and rampant urbanization.
